Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate recently reunited on her podcast, “MeSsy,” to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their iconic film, “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” During this special episode, Ferrell shared a humorous anecdote about a misunderstanding Applegate had regarding his marriage during the movie’s production.
Suspicion During Filming
In the July 9 episode, Ferrell, 56, joined Applegate, 52, to reminisce about their time on set. He recalled how Applegate assumed he was having marital issues with his wife, Viveca Ferrell, due to her frequent absences from social outings. “When we were shooting the movie, we would go out a lot socially,” Ferrell said, as Applegate laughed. “We would all go out as a group, like, on the weekends or whatever, grab a dinner. And, I was like, ‘Oh great, let’s do it!'” However, Viveca, 55, was often unavailable, which appeared suspicious to Applegate.
Clearing Up the Misunderstanding
Ferrell explained that Applegate eventually voiced her concerns, asking why Viveca wasn’t joining their social gatherings. As it turned out, Viveca had a valid reason for her absences—she was pregnant with their first son, Magnus. “The reason was she wasn’t feeling good because she was pregnant with Magnus,” Ferrell revealed. The couple shared the happy news halfway through the filming. Applegate recalled saying, “I knew something was up!” when she learned the truth.
A Strong Marriage
Applegate praised Ferrell and his wife, calling them “couple goals across the board” and “a force to be reckoned with.” Will and Viveca met in 1991 and tied the knot in August 2000. Next month, they will celebrate 24 years of marriage. The couple has three sons: Magnus, 20, Mattias, 17, and Axel, 14.
A Comedic Proposal
Ferrell also shared a story about his awkward yet memorable proposal to Viveca. He took her to a beach where they had one of their first dates, but Viveca found the beach “creepy at night.” This comment threw off Ferrell, who was trying to make the moment romantic. “I was trying to think of what I was going to say, and it just turned into, ‘So I, uh, really like you and, uh, anyway …’ Then I went down to a knee — at least I think I did — and proposed,” Ferrell recounted, noting the proposal ended up being funny, though not intentionally.
Ferrell and Applegate’s conversation on “MeSsy” not only provided a nostalgic look back at “Anchorman” but also offered a glimpse into Ferrell’s personal life and the strong bond he shares with his wife, Viveca.
