The daughter of legendary golfer Arnold Palmer, Peg Palmer Wears, has openly criticized former President Donald Trump for his recent vulgar remarks about her father. During a rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Trump made several inappropriate comments regarding Palmer, including discussing the golfer’s anatomy in a way that Wears found distasteful.
In a 12-minute tirade, Trump reminisced about Palmer, who was a local icon, but his comments quickly took a turn for the crude. He recalled conversations among professional golfers about Palmer’s size after showering, saying, “When he took the showers with other pros, they came out of there. They said, ‘Oh my God. That’s unbelievable.’” His remarks included a laughable tone that seemed to trivialize a serious figure in the sport.
Wears, speaking with Inside Edition, stated that her father would not have appreciated Trump’s lewd comments. She observed, “To talk about the showers and my father’s anatomy… I think Trump seems to be obsessed with these things, just like crowd size. Size seems to matter to him in what I’ve seen.”
Reflecting on her father’s character, Wears remarked that he believed in the Republican Party and often contemplated what he would think of current events. She expressed, “A day doesn’t go by that I don’t think about what my father would say about something or what’s happening. We didn’t always agree on things, but he was a quintessential American who believed fervently in this country, even when he questioned its direction.”
Wears noted that while she wasn’t upset by Trump’s remarks, she viewed them as an inappropriate way to honor her father’s legacy. “I think it was a poor choice of approaches to remembering my father, but what are you going to do?” she commented.
Previously, Wears had voiced her father’s disapproval of Trump’s behavior during the 2016 presidential campaign, indicating that he found Trump’s lack of civility concerning. She added that Trump’s use of her father’s name in such a context seemed highly inappropriate, suggesting that there were more respectful aspects of Palmer’s life to focus on.
As an unaffiliated voter residing in North Carolina, a key battleground state in the upcoming election, Wears has not disclosed whom she plans to support, reflecting the complexities many voters face in the current political climate.
