RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (Oct. 27, 2025) — A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed Monday afternoon while responding to a domestic-violence call in Rancho Cucamonga, authorities confirmed.
Deputy Andrew Nuñez, 30, a six-year veteran of the department, was fatally wounded during a confrontation with an armed suspect in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive shortly after 12:40 p.m., Sheriff Shannon Dicus said.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched at 12:37 p.m. after receiving reports of a man threatening a woman with a gun. As soon as they arrived, the suspect opened fire, striking Nuñez in the head. Additional deputies provided aid and called for emergency medical support before Nuñez was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. He later died of his injuries.
“This is a heartbreaking and devastating loss for our department and the community,” Sheriff Dicus said outside the hospital, surrounded by deputies and family members. “Deputy Nuñez was a dedicated public servant who risked his life to protect others. His courage and compassion will never be forgotten.”
Following the shooting, the suspect fled on a motorcycle, prompting a high-speed pursuit involving multiple law-enforcement agencies. The chase traveled eastbound along the 210 Freeway through several communities, reaching speeds over 100 mph.
At about 1:35 p.m., the suspect crashed near Campus Avenue in Upland and was taken into custody. Officials said he sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not yet released his identity.
Investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail, assisted by the California Highway Patrol and the FBI, are leading the investigation into both the shooting and the pursuit. The district attorney’s office is reviewing possible charges, including the murder of a peace officer.
Deputy Nuñez had served in the Rancho Cucamonga station for five years and was known for his professionalism and dedication. Sheriff Dicus said the fallen deputy leaves behind his wife, a 2-year-old daughter, and a second child on the way.
Flags across county facilities were lowered to half-staff Monday evening as deputies, officers, and residents gathered outside the medical center to honor his service.
“Please keep Deputy Nuñez’s family, loved ones, and fellow deputies in your thoughts and prayers during this time of profound loss,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement.
Funeral and memorial details will be announced later.
