On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Obama took to X, a prominent microblogging platform, to share a video recounting her experiences during the trip. “I was recently in Malawi and South Africa with @MelindaGates and Amal Clooney to meet with inspiring girls and leaders who are working to end child marriage and support girls by getting them the education they deserve. I hope you’ll watch the @BBC100women documentary,” she posted.

The subsequent documentary, titled “Michelle Obama: Changing the World,” aired on BBC and featured interviews with girls and women who interacted with the trio. The film shed light on the challenges and opportunities faced by girls in Africa and worldwide.

Despite the initiative’s noble intentions, Michelle Obama faced a barrage of criticism on X. Detractors responded with hateful and derogatory comments, accusing her of ineffectiveness, hypocrisy, racism, and even terrorism. One user, Sassafrass84, remarked, “And you got nothing done. Melinda Gates and Amal Clooney are as feckless as you are. Your trips are nothing more than virtue signaling.”

Another user, Shamrekt, questioned Obama about a movie they claimed she directed, alleging it conveyed a message of not trusting white people. The comments reached an extreme, with one user, Ally Cat, stating, “Hey Micheal! How about you and the rest of your terrorist friends leave our country alone.”

However, amid the criticism, Obama remained silent and did not engage with the negative comments. On the flip side, she received support from users commending her work and raising awareness about child marriage. Eleanor Liggens commented, “Thank you ladies for the work you do inspiring young women to be strong and who they are. You both are great examples of who young women should look up to.”

Marie-Ange Yao expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank you for your help in highlighting these issues and the ordeal lived by these young girls dear Michelle.”

Child marriage, a violation of human rights affecting one in every five girls globally according to UNICEF, disrupts a girl’s development, leading to early pregnancies, social isolation, and limited opportunities for education and career advancement. In Africa, where child marriage is most prevalent, Michelle Obama’s advocacy aligns with her longstanding commitment to girls’ education and empowerment, evident through initiatives such as Let Girls Learn and the Global Girls Alliance, and her bestselling memoir, “Becoming.”
