BARTOW COUNTY, GA — A tense encounter along a Cartersville highway turned deadly Wednesday night after 50-year-old Carrie Hall was shot and killed by law enforcement during a felony traffic stop. The confrontation unfolded after Hall allegedly fired a weapon at a home earlier that evening, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
The situation began when Hall, a resident of Cartersville, reportedly showed up at a residence in Bartow County and discharged a firearm. The homeowner, who knew Hall personally, was able to identify her for responding deputies.
Around 8:40 p.m., officers from the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office, joined by a Cartersville Police officer, located Hall’s vehicle near the intersection of State Route 20 (Canton Highway) and Conference Center Drive. Because of the earlier gunfire report, officers conducted what’s known as a felony traffic stop—a high-risk procedure used when a suspect is believed to be armed or dangerous.
According to law enforcement, Hall got out of her vehicle with a firearm in hand. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, officials say she refused to comply. During the standoff, officers opened fire. Hall was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.
The GBI has not yet released key details, such as what triggered the officers to fire their weapons. As with all officer-involved shootings in Georgia, the incident is under active investigation. Once the review is complete, findings will be turned over to the Bartow County District Attorney’s Office.
No officers were injured during the incident.
