In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Crump praised Walz’s commitment to justice and reform in the wake of these tragic events.
Walz, who recently joined Harris on the campaign trail in Philadelphia, was introduced by Harris as “the kind of vice president America deserves.” This appearance marks Walz’s debut as Harris’ running mate, following his prominent role in addressing the aftermath of Floyd’s death in 2020.
Floyd’s death at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin ignited nationwide protests and intensified calls for racial justice and police accountability. Governor Walz, a former social studies teacher, football coach, and army veteran, has been a vocal advocate for change. He acknowledged failures in handling the Minneapolis protests and highlighted the need to address systemic racism.
At a May 2020 press conference, Walz stated, “Minnesotans’ inability to deal with inequalities, inequities and quite honestly the racism that has persisted” as a key issue. His response included legislative efforts to ban chokeholds and enhance public safety measures, such as implementing mental health response teams.
Walz also extended his support to Daunte Wright’s family after Wright was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
