Ben Crump, the renowned civil rights attorney known for his work with the families of George Floyd and Daunte Wright, has publicly endorsed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential running mate. In an exclusive interview with Newsweek, Crump praised Walz’s commitment to justice and reform in the wake of these tragic events.

Walz, who recently joined Harris on the campaign trail in Philadelphia, was introduced by Harris as “the kind of vice president America deserves.” This appearance marks Walz’s debut as Harris’ running mate, following his prominent role in addressing the aftermath of Floyd’s death in 2020.

Floyd’s death at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin ignited nationwide protests and intensified calls for racial justice and police accountability. Governor Walz, a former social studies teacher, football coach, and army veteran, has been a vocal advocate for change. He acknowledged failures in handling the Minneapolis protests and highlighted the need to address systemic racism.

At a May 2020 press conference, Walz stated, “Minnesotans’ inability to deal with inequalities, inequities and quite honestly the racism that has persisted” as a key issue. His response included legislative efforts to ban chokeholds and enhance public safety measures, such as implementing mental health response teams.

Walz also extended his support to Daunte Wright’s family after Wright was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Crump commended Walz for his legislative achievements, which include safeguarding voting rights, creating protections for families separated in foster care, and passing the CROWN Act to prevent discrimination based on natural hairstyles.

Crump noted Walz’s understanding of the needs and struggles of everyday Americans striving for a better life. As Harris’ VP pick, Walz’s record on education, healthcare, and gun control has received praise, with Harris highlighting his balanced approach to gun ownership and support for additional background checks.

Despite the support, Walz’s handling of the Minnesota protests has faced criticism. The Trump campaign has criticized him for his delayed National Guard deployment and accused him of siding with rioters. They have also targeted Harris for her support of bail funds for protesters, alleging she encouraged violent behavior.

The debate over Walz’s selection as Harris’ running mate continues. Supporters argue that his experience and dedication to justice make him a valuable asset to the campaign, while critics question his crisis management decisions. As the election approaches, the spotlight remains on Walz’s role and his potential impact on a Harris administration.
