On the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the host made a heartfelt appeal to undecided voters regarding the upcoming election, particularly urging them to consider Kamala Harris despite acknowledging her flaws. His candid remarks reflected both concern and a sense of urgency as the election approaches.
During his Friday night monologue, Maher tackled various topics, ranging from the economy to SpaceX, ultimately honing in on the critical choice voters face next week. He emphasized the importance of supporting the Democrats to prevent what he described as “the rule of a mad king,” referencing the potential consequences of a Trump presidency.
“Do I love everything about Kamala? No. Who told you you get to love everything? Do I wish she had a better reason to run for president than ‘I’m not Trump’? Yes, that would be helpful. But let’s not forget: ‘I’m not Trump’ is still a really great reason,” Maher concluded.
Leading up to this declaration, Maher defended the Democrats’ economic record while criticizing the so-called “woke mind virus” and drawing parallels between undecided voters and last-minute Christmas shoppers. He portrayed these voters as being in a precarious position, torn between their disdain for Trump and their uncertainties about Harris.
“Undecided voters know the election is looming, yet they hesitate, much like my father who did all his Christmas shopping at the last minute,” Maher said. He humorously illustrated the indecision of these voters, likening them to those who wait until Christmas Eve to buy gifts, unsure of what to select.
Acknowledging the apprehensions of undecided voters about a possible Harris administration, Maher reassured them that their hesitations are understood. “You don’t like Trump, or you’d already be supporting him, but you still feel torn,” he stated.
Maher also praised the Biden administration’s achievements, noting that the economy is stronger than many realize. “As economist Steven Pinker puts it, America today boasts an economy with an unemployment rate of 4 percent and a per person GDP of $85,000. It doesn’t need to be made great again; it is great,” he asserted.
He cautioned that Democrats need to communicate their successes better, pointing out that metrics like employment and inflation have improved since the pandemic. “If Trump were president during this economic landscape, we’d be hearing nonstop about how it’s the greatest economy ever,” Maher remarked, emphasizing the need for Democrats to share positive economic news effectively.
Using a visual aid to demonstrate declining inflation rates, Maher explained, “Inflation peaked in 2022 and has since dropped to 2.4 percent. Biden managed this without causing a recession, which is no small feat.”
Ultimately, Maher’s message to undecided voters was clear: support Kamala Harris because the economy is thriving, and Democrats must convey that message to counter any misconceptions. “Undecided voters should realize that things aren’t so bad, but Democrats struggle to voice this for fear of being seen as dismissive of those who are struggling.”
