WASHINGTON — House Republicans are set to initiate impeachment proceedings against Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, citing concerns over his handling of the ongoing border crisis, according to a GOP source. A committee spokesperson revealed that the House Committee on Homeland Security conducted a year-long investigation into Mayorkas’ role in the unprecedented situation at the Southwest border. Following a bipartisan vote in the House, articles of impeachment will be taken up in the coming weeks, with hearings expected to commence next week, the statement noted.

The move to impeach Mayorkas coincides with the prominence of immigration as a key issue in the 2024 presidential election. Republicans, led by House Speaker Mike Johnson, are critical of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. Johnson, accompanied by fellow Republicans, is scheduled to visit a busy section of the US-Mexico border, where recent surges of migrants have heightened tensions.

In response to Johnson’s visit, a senior administration official accused the House Speaker of “playing games” and urged him to focus on meaningful reforms instead of engaging in political maneuvers. During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Johnson labeled the situation at the border as a “catastrophe” and criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the issue, emphasizing the need for policy changes rather than increased funding.

The dispute between Republicans and the Biden administration regarding southern border management has escalated to impeachment proceedings against the DHS chief responsible for border security. The committee spokesperson affirmed that hearings will commence next week to address Mayorkas’ alleged misconduct and failure to enforce the law promptly.

The Department of Homeland Security responded, dismissing the impeachment push as a “baseless political exercise” rejected by members of both parties. DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg emphasized that there is no valid basis for impeaching Mayorkas, and the effort is a distraction from critical national security priorities.

Mayorkas, seeking to downplay concerns about impeachment, advocated for increased funding for border security, citing resource limitations in performing the department’s duties effectively. Despite reaching record-high border crossings in December, senior administration officials noted recent progress, including a significant drop in crossings in the past few days.

Mayorkas urged the need for additional personnel, technology, and asylum officers to address the growing challenges at the border. The impeachment effort, a rare occurrence for a cabinet official, follows a November House vote referring a resolution to impeach Mayorkas to the Homeland Security Committee. The GOP has long sought his impeachment over concerns about the Department of Homeland Security and border security, with the latest development unfolding amid broader debates on immigration policy at both the federal and state levels.
