In a recent segment on “CNN This Morning,” political analyst Errol Louis delivered a stern warning to President Joe Biden, cautioning that his bid for re-election might be in jeopardy if he persists in centering his campaign around the economic policies branded as “Bidenomics.”
Fox News reported on Friday, December 22, 2023, that Louis underscored the potential negative perception of Biden’s economic agenda by voters, citing concerns such as inflation and possible misinterpretations.
Louis, emphasizing the paramount role of the economy in any campaign, suggested that Biden’s push for “Bidenomics” might not be resonating effectively with the electorate. He referred to polls indicating dissatisfaction among Americans, recommending a strategic pivot for the President.
“He’s tried to use ‘Bidenomics’ because the economy is always the number one issue. The polls are suggesting that’s not necessarily going over very well with people, in part because of inflation, maybe misperceptions about some other things, maybe just an unfortunate lag,” Louis stated.
The analyst proposed an alternative approach, advising Biden to revisit themes that have historically resonated with the public. Specifically, he recommended emphasizing Biden’s commitment to defending democracy against perceived threats, particularly invoking former President Trump as a symbol of such threats.
When CNN host Poppy Harlow questioned Louis about Biden’s recent campaign memo highlighting the growing threat posed by Donald Trump to American democracy, he responded affirmatively, suggesting that this could be Biden’s strongest political card.
Louis argued that the defense of democracy strategy had previously worked for Biden and could potentially overshadow the economic pitch that hasn’t gained as much traction.
The conversation explored recent polls reflecting dissatisfaction among Americans, including Democratic voters, regarding Biden’s handling of the economy. A November 2023 New York Times/Siena College poll revealed that over 60% of Americans in battleground states did not view the economy favorably.
Louis stressed the urgency for Biden, asserting that even if the economy is improving, positive voter perception is crucial for a successful re-election bid.
“Sure, the economy might be getting better, but if voters don’t perceive it in time, then he’ll lose,” Louis predicted.
He pointed to Biden’s previous success with the defense of democracy strategy, citing it as the President’s origin story during the 2020 campaign. Louis referenced Biden’s response to the Charlottesville march, where he associated it with Donald Trump and framed his political message around the need to “do better.”
Louis argued that this strategy proved effective for Biden in the past, making it a potentially strong play for the upcoming election.
