A recent chat with CNN’s Erin Burnett, Ty Cobb, the former White House lawyer during the Trump administration, shared his take on the legal hurdles facing ex-President Donald Trump.

According to The Hill on November 21, 2023, Cobb suggested that Trump’s narcissism might lead to him landing in jail. He specifically pointed out concerns about potential violations of a gag order related to the allegations of overturning the 2020 election results.

I don’t think his first or second violation of the gag order will find him sent to jail, but I think ultimately, his narcissism will get the best of him, Cobb told Burnett, highlighting the possibility of Trump pushing boundaries until facing consequences.

Cobb expressed confidence in the court upholding the limited gag order imposed by Judge Tanya Chutkan, emphasizing the need to respect the court’s restrictions.

The former White House lawyer also discussed the ongoing evaluation by a three-judge panel, appointed by Presidents Obama and Biden, regarding Trump’s attempt to halt the gag order.

Currently on hold pending the ruling from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, the order prohibits Trump and his legal team from using language targeting special counsel Jack Smith, court staff, and witnesses involved in the case.

Prosecutors pointed to Trump’s social media posts involving case individuals as evidence for the necessity of the gag order. In response, Trump argued that it would infringe upon his free speech rights and hinted at appealing to the Supreme Court if unsuccessful.

Burnett raised the prospect of jail time for Trump if he violated the gag order, to which Cobb agreed, stating, that’s exactly right.

Cobb acknowledged the judges’ skepticism during the appeal hearing, noting their frustration with both sides’ arguments. He believes the judges have the skill to interpret and enforce the order carefully.

The gag order, initially imposed due to concerns about Trump’s behavior, has faced a turbulent trajectory, temporarily lifted and later reimposed. It currently remains paused as the appeals court deliberates on Trump’s challenge, aiming to prevent what prosecutors described as Trump’s deranged bombardment of legal proceedings.

As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes are on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and its forthcoming ruling, poised to significantly impact the trajectory of Trump’s federal case.
