Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s departure from Congress has set the stage for a special election in his staunchly conservative Central Valley district. However, the race is off to a rocky start as one of the leading Republican candidates, Assemblyman Vince Fong, gets disqualified by the California Secretary of State.
The snag in Fong’s candidacy stems from a legal hiccup, with the Secretary of State citing state law that prohibits candidates from filing nomination papers for more than one office at the same election. Despite initially deciding against running, Fong changed his mind after fellow Republican Shannon Grove opted out of the race.
The Secretary of State’s office has determined that Fong’s filed nomination papers for Congressional District 20 were improperly submitted, reports KBAK.
With Fong out of contention, attention now shifts to David Giglio, a local businessman and a key Republican contender. Giglio has garnered endorsements from Trump allies Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, adding a layer of intrigue to an already eventful election race.
