Surprising turn of events, conservatives in Virginia are raising concerns about the integrity of the 2020 presidential election after the recent prosecution of Michele White, the former top election official in Prince William County. Initially viewed as evidence of fraud, the case took an unexpected twist when charges against White were dropped, revealing tabulation errors that actually favored former President Donald Trump.
According to a report by Raw Story on January 12, 2024, the Prince William elections office disclosed that Trump gained an additional 2,327 votes in the county, while President Joe Biden suffered a deficit of 1,648 votes. Despite the swing of a few thousand votes, the overall outcome in Virginia remained unchanged, with Biden winning by over 450,000 votes.
Prince William Director of Elections Eric Olsen explained the errors, attributing them to the results tapes not being programmed in a format compatible with state reporting requirements. Olsen clarified that these reporting mistakes did not consistently favor one party or candidate but were likely due to a lack of proper planning, a challenging election environment, and human error.
The errors extended beyond the presidential race, affecting the U.S. Senate race as well. Both Democrat Mark Warner and his Republican challenger, Daniel Gade, experienced an undercount, but it did not alter the outcome of Warner’s victory. U.S. Representative Rob Wittman, a Republican, also faced an undercount in Prince William, but it did not change the election result in his favor.
Olsen reassured the public that the elections office has implemented improvements to prevent such errors in the future, emphasizing the commitment of public servants and volunteers working to preserve and protect democracy.
While the Prince William case gained prominence through the election integrity unit led by Attorney General Jason Miyares, the dropping of charges against White highlighted that the errors were not a deliberate attempt to undermine the electoral process. Miyares’s office expressed satisfaction that their investigation prompted reforms in the Prince William County Office of Elections, with spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita emphasizing increased transparency as a positive outcome that would enhance confidence in the electoral process.
The incident underscores the complexity of election processes and the ongoing need for improvement, concluding with Olsen emphasizing the diligence of those who work to uphold democracy.
