The Milwaukee Bucks found themselves with another disappointing outcome on Thursday night, suffering a 122-99 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies—their fourth defeat in five games. While the Grizzlies’ All-Star guard Ja Morant stole the spotlight with an impressive triple-double (26 points, 10 rebounds, and 14 assists), the Bucks struggled, particularly with Damian Lillard’s challenging night.

Lillard, known for his scoring prowess, managed only 4 points on a 1-for-12 shooting performance, including a 0-for-6 showing from beyond the arc. While the Bucks’ overall shooting struggles contributed to the loss, with the team shooting just 21.4% from three-point range, Lillard highlighted other critical aspects that played a larger role.

Lillard Reflects on Team’s “Undisciplined” Transition Defense

Following the game, Lillard was candid in addressing the team’s lack of hustle and intensity, particularly on transition defense. “Sometimes we shoot, and it looks like Giannis (Antetokounmpo) or Brook (Lopez) might get it, so we’re waiting around,” he said, describing moments when Bucks players appeared to assume a teammate would secure the rebound. This led to Memphis gaining easy transition opportunities when the Bucks were caught out of position.

This issue of “undisciplined plays,” as Lillard put it, has impacted the Bucks repeatedly through their first five games. He explained that players sometimes gamble on potential turnovers or rebounds rather than committing to sound defensive positioning. “Each time it’s happened, we’ve gotten hurt by it,” he added, referring to Memphis’ advantage in exploiting these errors.

Ja Morant and Memphis Capitalize on Bucks’ Defensive Shortcomings

Morant, a high-flying guard known for his agility and offensive prowess, took full advantage of Milwaukee’s lackluster defense. Numerous fast-break opportunities led to easy baskets for Memphis, allowing Morant to orchestrate scoring plays with his signature passing and finishing at the rim.

Milwaukee’s 10 turnovers—usually a manageable number—were less the problem than their inconsistent transition defense. Morant and the Grizzlies capitalized on these lapses, creating momentum and turning turnovers and missed shots into quick points.

A Needed Shift for the Bucks’ Success in the Eastern Conference

Despite Lillard’s challenging shooting night, Milwaukee’s defensive lapses were a significant factor in the loss. For the Bucks to make strides in the Eastern Conference, they’ll need to tighten up their transition defense and commit to disciplined decision-making. Improvement in Lillard’s shooting consistency will also be key, as he currently holds a shooting average of just 41.3% through the season’s first five games.
