The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Home Depot located at 1200 Flower St. According to Burbank Police Sgt. Brent Fekety, the suspect called the police claiming to be armed with a gun and threatening to shoot people. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the suspect still seated in a vehicle.
A brief verbal exchange between the officers and the suspect ensued, which quickly escalated when the suspect displayed aggressive behavior. This ultimately led to the officers discharging their weapons in an attempt to neutralize the threat.
Following the shooting, immediate medical aid was requested, and the suspect was transported to Providence Holy Cross Trauma Center by Burbank paramedics. Tragically, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting is being conducted in accordance with Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates that a state prosecutor independently investigate police shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian. The California Police Shooting Investigation Team, under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice (DOJ), has initiated the investigation. Once completed, the findings will be handed over to the Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division of the DOJ for independent review.
