CNN has set the stage for a historic showdown in the upcoming 2024 presidential election cycle with the announcement of rules governing the first debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Scheduled for June 27 in Atlanta, this face-off marks their first in-person debate since the 2020 elections.
Hosted by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, the debate promises strict adherence to predefined formats and regulations agreed upon by both campaigns. Notably, there remains a potential for independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to join, provided he meets specific criteria.
To qualify, candidates must achieve 15% support in four national polls and be on the ballot in states collectively representing at least 270 electoral college votes. As of now, Kennedy has secured ballot access in six states, totaling 89 potential electoral college votes.
The 90-minute debate, featuring two commercial breaks where candidates cannot consult their campaign teams, will see podium positions determined by a coin toss. Microphones will be muted outside designated speaking times, with candidates permitted only a pen, notepad, and water bottle—no props or prepared notes allowed. Unlike previous debates, there will be no studio audience, with moderators empowered to ensure timing and decorum.
Apart from polling and ballot requirements, candidates must meet Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution’s eligibility criteria. Biden, Trump, Kennedy, and other candidates like Cornel West and Jill Stein have fulfilled these requirements, formally declaring candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.
With major national polls involved in the qualification process, including CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, and others, the debate holds significant sway over voter perceptions. Both Biden and Trump have accepted CNN’s invitation under these stipulations, setting the stage for a crucial event in the 2024 election cycle.
As the first major face-off between the leading candidates, the debate’s potential inclusion of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. introduces an intriguing element, contingent on meeting the stringent qualification standards. All eyes now turn to Atlanta on June 27, anticipating a pivotal moment in the 2024 presidential race.
