Recent developments reported by HuffPost on June 11, 2024, Ty Cobb, a former legal advisor in the Trump administration, has voiced concerns over former President Donald Trump’s escalating rhetoric regarding seeking retribution against perceived adversaries.
Cobb emphasized the gravity of Trump’s statements in an article by NBC News, stating, “I think there should be concern.”
Highlighting the intensity of Trump’s anger following his recent conviction, Cobb remarked, “From a 30,000-foot view, what I see is Trump angrier now than he was before because he is convicted now.” This heightened hostility is particularly alarming as Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, has intensified discussions of revenge should he regain the presidency in November, following his conviction on all 34 charges in a hush money trial last month.
Scheduled for July 11, Trump’s sentencing coincides closely with the Republican National Convention commencing in Milwaukee, adding to the gravity of the situation.
Cobb recalled a recent instance where Fox News personality Sean Hannity attempted to temper Trump’s inflammatory remarks during an interview. “Even Hannity recognized that this was dangerous territory and tried to reel him in,” Cobb remarked, noting Trump’s defiance in the face of Hannity’s intervention.
Trump’s explicit intentions were laid bare during the interview as he stated, “Look, when this election is over, based on what they’ve done, I would have every right to go after them,” referring to his political adversaries.
These sentiments were echoed in a separate conversation with Phil McGraw, also known as former TV therapist Dr. Phil, where Trump argued, “sometimes revenge can be justified.”
Cobb, now a vocal critic of Trump, had previously warned in February about the potential for retaliation against President Joe Biden should Trump secure a return to the Oval Office in 2024. Trump has repeatedly asserted, without evidence, that Biden and his administration are behind the legal cases against him.
“I do believe that if Trump is elected that President Biden could be in danger of retribution,” Cobb remarked in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett. However, Cobb expressed doubts about the feasibility of such actions, stating, “I don’t believe there’s a legal basis for it, and I don’t think it would go very far.”
Reiterating his concerns to NBC News, Cobb underscored the importance of the government’s checks and balances, suggesting that they should prevent Trump from carrying out any retaliatory actions, given that he would need others to execute his orders.
