A check-in agent for a Qantas flight from Dallas to Sydney was photographed with two Palestinian flag badges on his jacket, a breach of Qantas policy prohibiting the wearing of “unauthorized badges” amid the Middle East conflict.

A 16-year-old Jewish Australian student expressed concern to the agent at Dallas airport, stating that the flag might be perceived as “offensive” and “intimidating” to Jewish passengers. The agent, citing the right to free speech and expression in the U.S., defended his choice.

The Epoch Times confirmed that the agent worked for a third-party service provider utilized by Qantas for check-in at Dallas Fort Worth Airport. Qantas has addressed the issue with the service provider, who will remind the agent of the airline’s badge policy.

Referring to a statement from early January, a Qantas spokesperson emphasized that employees must not wear unauthorized badges, despite the airline respecting diverse views on the Middle East conflict. The statement underscored the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for customers and employees.

Recent incidents involving Qantas cabin crew and a Jetstar employee wearing Palestinian flag badges prompted concerns from the Australian Jewish Association (AJA). The AJA called for accountability, asserting that passengers should not be confronted with the political positions of airline employees, especially given the recent surge in antisemitic attacks associated with the pro-Palestinian cause.

Additionally, a complaint was lodged against a Virgin Australia flight attendant believed to be wearing a Palestinian flag pin. However, the airline clarified that the pin represented the flag of the United Arab Emirates, permitted under their policy. The airline allows staff proficient in multiple languages to wear flag pins to assist passengers.
