Coweta County Mourns as Fire Chief Fatally Shot While Aiding Motorist in Alabama

Coweta County community is reeling from the tragic death of Fire Battalion Chief James Bartholomew “Bart” Cauthen, who was fatally shot on January 19, 2025, while trying to assist a motorist in need. Cauthen, a respected leader and mentor, was providing help when the incident took a devastating turn.

According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, the events unfolded at around 5:00 p.m. on County Road 267 in the Stroud community near U.S. Highway 431. Cauthen had stopped to assist a motorist whose vehicle had collided with a deer. As he accompanied the driver to seek help from a nearby residence, the homeowner, William Randall Franklin, allegedly opened fire without warning.

In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Cauthen was fatally injured, while both the motorist and Franklin sustained injuries. Emergency responders arrived to find Cauthen deceased at the scene. The other two individuals were airlifted to hospitals in Columbus, Georgia, and LaGrange, Alabama, for treatment.

Authorities have confirmed that Franklin, 33, of Chambers County, Alabama, is now facing murder charges. After receiving medical treatment, Franklin was transported to the Muscogee County Jail, where he is being held on a warrant issued by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.

Coweta County Fire Rescue expressed their deep sorrow in a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of a valued team member. “Tonight, Coweta Fire Rescue is devastated to hear of the loss of Battalion Chief Bart Cauthen. We lost one of our brothers, leaders, mentors, and family members to a senseless tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to the Cauthen family as they go through this difficult time. We ask that you keep this family in your thoughts and prayers,” the department shared on social media.

The Sheriff’s Office described the scene as “horrific” and noted that the investigation remains ongoing. It is still unclear whether any exchange occurred between Franklin, Cauthen, or the motorist before shots were fired.

The community remembers Cauthen as a dedicated public servant who exemplified courage and compassion in his role. Arrangements for his memorial service are expected to be announced in the coming days.
