“The Daily Show,” correspondent Ronny Chieng took aim at Donald Trump’s contradictory statements about debating Vice President Kamala Harris. The former president’s comments during a Fox News interview, where he was vague about whether he would face Harris in a debate, drew sharp criticism and humor from Chieng.
Trump, in the interview aired on Monday night, delivered a mixed message on debating Harris. He expressed a desire to participate but also hinted at reasons he might avoid it. “I want to do a debate. But I also can say this. Everybody knows who I am. And now people know who she is,” Trump said, further adding he would “probably end up debating.”
Chieng seized on these remarks, quipping, “It sounds like Trump just lost a debate with himself?” He continued with a jab at Trump’s past debate performances, suggesting that the former president might be avoiding another debate due to his previous encounter with Joe Biden, which led to Biden’s eventual withdrawal from the presidential race and endorsement of Harris.
Chieng’s commentary didn’t stop there. He further mocked Trump’s reluctance to debate, saying, “No shit, he doesn’t want to debate again. I mean, if he debates again, either he loses to Kamala, or he wins and they swap her out for Abraham Lincoln. He’s like, ‘How many bosses are there in this game?’”
This comedic critique highlights the ongoing tension and speculation about the upcoming debates and the shifting dynamics of the presidential race. With Harris gaining momentum since her candidacy announcement, Trump’s hesitation to engage in another debate could signal his apprehension about facing a formidable opponent.
