With the 2024 presidential election reaching a razor-thin finish, the Democratic Party has a strategy in place if former President Donald Trump prematurely declares victory, as he did in 2020. The Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, has rallied her campaign and party allies to prepare a swift response, using both social media and television to urge patience and insist on counting all votes before a winner is confirmed.

Trump has openly hinted at the possibility of claiming victory on Election Day itself, despite election officials cautioning that counting could extend for days. In response, Democratic leaders are poised to flood the media with calls for due process in vote-counting. “If he does, we’re ready to respond immediately,” Harris said in an interview with ABC, underlining the party’s commitment to preventing a rushed or false consensus.

Mobilizing the Media and Public Opinion

Key Democratic officials, including Harris campaign insiders and the Democratic National Committee (DNC), have stressed that their strategy is primarily focused on informing and reassuring the public. An unnamed top DNC official shared that their response would quickly “get up on TV and provide the truth,” leveraging an extensive network of public influencers to counter any premature victory declaration by Trump. The goal is to ensure that no candidate claims victory before the counting process is thoroughly completed.

In 2020, Trump’s early victory declaration was met with backlash from both Democrats and some Republicans. This time, however, experts believe the situation might be different. Over the past few years, Trump has tightened his influence within the Republican Party, potentially allowing for more party support should he make another premature victory claim.

The Republican Strategy and Potential Fallout

Trump and his allies have spent recent months preparing to contest a close loss, with rhetoric alleging potential non-citizen votes and a legal team ready to challenge disputed results. Trump has emphasized to his supporters the importance of securing a decisive victory, often stating at rallies that their win must be “too big to rig.” Key allies, including Steve Bannon, are encouraging him to declare victory early to control the narrative.

Bill Bean, a prominent Trump donor, stated that he hopes for a clear outcome, either way, to avoid prolonged disputes. “The best scenario is a decisive win for either candidate to ensure the results are widely accepted,” Bean told Reuters.

No Republican Pushback Expected

In contrast to 2020, Trump’s current control over the Republican Party suggests a diminished likelihood of internal criticism if he does declare victory prematurely. “There’s little indication that prominent Republicans or party officials would challenge him this time,” remarked Chip Felkel, a long-time Republican strategist who has voiced opposition to Trump. This firm grip over the party could embolden Trump to move forward with his strategy without concern for dissent within his ranks.
