Powerful tornadoes and storms wreaked havoc in southwestern Michigan, leaving a path of destruction including damaged homes, businesses, and injuries, according to a CNN report on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
The destruction unfolded in Pavilion Township, Kalamazoo County, where a tornado struck a mobile home park, causing injuries to at least a dozen people. In total, 15 to 20 individuals sustained minor injuries and were taken to local hospitals, as reported by Andrew Alspach, a spokesperson for the county’s emergency management.
The nearby city of Portage, south of Kalamazoo, also faced significant impact, with a FedEx facility suffering roof and structural damage. While there were no reports of serious injuries, about 50 individuals were temporarily trapped inside due to downed power lines.
The National Weather Service confirmed at least one, possibly two tornadoes in the Portage area, prompting multiple tornado warnings and causing extensive damage to buildings, gas leaks, and blocked roads.
Further devastation hit Centreville, where buildings were destroyed and homes flattened by another tornado. St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman described scenes of utter destruction, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Branch County also suffered significant damage, with at least seven homes destroyed and widespread power outages affecting thousands of residents.
Union City in Branch County faced Michigan’s first tornado emergency, highlighting the imminent threat of catastrophic damage and loss of life. The Storm Prediction Center reported numerous tornadoes and hail across the state, leaving tens of thousands without power.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for affected counties, pledging support and resources for recovery efforts. Citizens are urged to stay indoors and off the roads to facilitate emergency response and ensure safety in the aftermath of these destructive tornadoes.
