Former President Donald Trump is reportedly anxious that Vice President Kamala Harris’s forthcoming Democratic National Convention (DNC) speech could surpass the viewership of his own Republican National Convention (RNC) address. According to The Independent, Trump has voiced concerns multiple times, despite previously boasting about his speech’s impressive ratings.
Trump’s 2020 RNC address attracted a peak viewership of 28.4 million, as reported by Nielsen. While Trump has expressed confidence in the high turnout for his past speeches, he appears unsettled by the possibility of Harris drawing a larger audience.
In response to these concerns, Trump’s campaign issued a statement to Rolling Stone, dismissing the idea that Harris could outperform Trump. “Voters know Kamala is weak, failed, and dangerously liberal, and the Democrat ticket is the most radical in American history,” the campaign declared, reflecting their strategy of portraying the Democratic ticket as disconnected from mainstream America.
Political analysts and media experts predict that the 2024 presidential race will be one of the most dramatic in recent history. The election, already marked by a high-profile candidate swap and an assassination attempt, is expected to become even more intense as November approaches.
Professor Frank Sesno, director of strategic initiatives at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, described the current campaigns as “the fiercest competing political reality shows” he has ever seen. “There’s so much drama on both sides, there’s so much tension between the two sides, and there’s a huge suspense as to what’s going to happen,” Sesno remarked to USA Today.
The DNC has introduced novel media strategies this year, including granting over 200 social media content creators special access to the convention at the United Center. This move aims to engage a broader, younger audience who increasingly rely on social media for news.
Aside from Kamala Harris’s nomination, the ongoing Democratic convention also serves as a farewell for President Joe Biden. In his Monday address, Biden highlighted his administration’s achievements in economic recovery and infrastructure. He urged voters to safeguard democracy, framing the upcoming election as crucial for the nation’s future.
“Are you ready to vote for freedom? Are you ready to vote for democracy and for America? Let me ask you, are you ready to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz?” Biden asked, rallying Democratic voters to support Harris and the party’s agenda.
Biden also criticized Trump for his continued false claims about the 2020 election, emphasizing the ongoing tension between the two camps. “You cannot say you love your country only when you win,” Biden declared, pointing out Trump’s refusal to accept the election results.
The convention also featured other notable moments, including United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain’s dramatic protest against Trump. Fain revealed a T-shirt reading “Trump is a scab,” highlighting the labor movement’s stance against the former president.
Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance at the convention, expressing her gratitude to President Biden and reinforcing the Democratic party’s commitment to its agenda.
As the election draws nearer, both the RNC and DNC are setting the stage for a fiercely contested race, with viewership and public attention at the forefront of campaign strategies.
