Peculiar twist on the campaign trail, former President Donald Trump has introduced a mystifying new insult for Vice President Kamala Harris: “Kamabla.” This term emerged in a pair of late-night social media posts where Trump attacked both Harris and President Joe Biden over rising grocery and energy prices.
Trump’s first post stated, “Kamabla Harris is afraid to Debate me on FoxNews. She will be easier to defeat on the Debate Stage than Crooked Joe Biden, just watch!” A few hours later, he followed with another rant, accusing Harris and other Democratic figures of conspiring against him.
The origin and meaning of “Kamabla” remain unclear, but Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, repeatedly responded to inquiries with the same misspelled version of Harris’s name. The new insult seems to continue Trump’s pattern of targeting Harris with racially charged remarks.
Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former White House communications director under Trump, commented, “Trump can’t wrap his head around how to attack Kamala Harris so he’s leaned into his greatest hits: insults, name calling, misogyny and racism. She’s truly confounded him.” Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika added, “Convicted felon Donald Trump is spiraling and scrambling because he clearly has no idea how to run against a former prosecutor.”
Despite his frequent complaints about being unable to campaign due to legal proceedings, Trump’s current campaign schedule is sparse, with only a single event planned in Montana, a state not critical for the upcoming election. This has led to speculation about his campaign strategy.
Farah Griffin noted, “It’s bizarre. It truly feels like Trump is phoning in this election. The nicknames are lazy and ineffective, and this week he isn’t traveling to a single battleground state.”
Trump’s history of making racially charged remarks spans decades. In the 1970s, he settled a Department of Justice investigation into his family’s real estate business for refusing to rent to Black applicants. In 1989, he called for the death penalty for the Central Park Five, who were later exonerated. More recently, he spread the false “birther” conspiracy about President Barack Obama and made derogatory remarks about immigrants and minority communities.
Trump’s recent comments about Harris included a claim that she only “became Black” recently, despite her long-standing acknowledgment of her Indian and Jamaican heritage. Jennifer Horn, a former chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party, said, “Trump’s insults are always offensive. In the case of Kamala Harris, his racism and misogyny are out of control.”
Michael Steele, a former chair of the Republican National Committee, urged people not to be distracted by Trump’s antics, stating, “It’s BS. It means nothing. He knows what he’s doing, and the press is always trying to make it more than it is. He’s a disrespectful, insecure 78-year-old man acting like a petulant 10-year-old bully.”
As the election approaches, Trump’s strategy and behavior continue to draw scrutiny and criticism, raising questions about the effectiveness of his approach to campaigning and his choice of targets.
