It was a surreal moment, even by the chaotic standards of Donald Trump’s second presidency—one that instantly became meme-worthy. Standing in the Oval Office on Tuesday, the former reality TV star-turned-president found himself overshadowed by none other than Elon Musk. The two fielded questions from reporters, but it wasn’t Trump leading the conversation. Instead, the tech billionaire dominated the discussion, particularly regarding his controversial DOGE initiatives that have thrown federal institutions into disarray.
As if the scene wasn’t bizarre enough, Musk’s young son, known simply as “X,” had free rein of the most powerful room in the world. At one point, he climbed onto his father’s shoulders, an unusual display that reportedly earned a later reprimand from his mother, musician Grimes.
Political commentators wasted no time dissecting the power dynamic on display. One CNN analyst described Musk as “a menacing adversary for the federal government” and warned that Trump was “playing with fire by ceding him so much influence.” The New York Times reported that Musk made “sweeping claims” about fraud—without offering a shred of evidence. When pressed by a reporter about his now-infamous statement on “millions for condoms in Gaza,” Musk admitted, “We will make mistakes. But we’ll act quickly to correct any mistakes.”
Elon even defies all of Trump’s rules! the dress code, and no kids allowed in the oval office or at work, proving once again that he is in charge and Trump is not. Musk and his 4 yr old son both interrupted Trump and Trump looked very angry and turned away from the kid. pic.twitter.com/gU35jwxuVo

Over on MSNBC, Lawrence O’Donnell delivered a fiery 17-minute monologue, interpreting the scene as Trump submitting to Musk’s authority. He pointed out that earlier in the day, Jordan’s King Abdullah visited the White House—a true head of state. But by the evening, Musk had projected “a picture of presidential subservience the likes of which we have never seen.”
What was perhaps most striking? Musk did not conform to White House decorum, showing up in casual attire and bringing his child—an unheard-of move for a presidential visitor. Even more shocking, Musk spoke more than Trump during the press event, a stark departure from the norm for a president who thrives on dominating the spotlight.
So, will this unusual power dynamic last? Or will Trump, known for his fragile ego, grow tired of playing second fiddle to Musk? With years left in his presidency, anything is possible.
