Surprising turn of events, Dr. Phil McGraw’s new media venture, Merit Street Media, has reportedly cut approximately one-third of its 100-person workforce. This significant reduction in staff, announced earlier this week, primarily affects employees in the morning and evening news departments.
Founded by McGraw earlier this year, Merit Street Media recently made headlines with its reboot of McGraw’s daytime talk show, “Dr. Phil Primetime,” which airs on the network. The layoffs, involving fewer than 40 staff members, were described as a “complete shock” by those affected.
According to a statement from the company, the decision to downsize was part of a broader strategy to consolidate departments and streamline operations. “Following the brief summer hiatus of ‘Dr. Phil Primetime,’ Merit Street implemented ongoing consolidations of departments and roles in efforts to achieve efficiencies at the highest level,” the statement read. Unfortunately, this restructuring led to the layoffs.
A staff member shared with Mediaite, “These layoffs came as a complete shock to everyone on the staff.” Another source added, “Some people uprooted their entire lives to move here for this job without a safety net and now the rug has been pulled out from under them.” Reports indicate that newer hires were particularly affected, receiving no severance.
Dr. Phil McGraw, known for his long-running daytime TV show, ended his 21-year stint on daytime television last year. He launched “Dr. Phil Primetime” on Merit Street Media in November, marking his return to the airwaves. McGraw chose the name “Merit Street” to symbolize the meritocracy of America and “Main Street” America’s everyday concerns.
The network was established in partnership with Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN), a Christian TV group that boasts a reach of 80 million households. Despite the setbacks, McGraw’s new show continues to tackle controversial and engaging topics, reminiscent of his previous show’s focus.
The recent layoffs at Merit Street Media raise questions about the future of McGraw’s network and its ability to maintain its programming and staff. As the company navigates these changes, the media industry will be watching closely to see how it adapts and moves forward.
