Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid has responded firmly to recent criticism regarding his availability and conditioning as he recovers from a left knee injury. Following a critical article by Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Embiid expressed his frustration over allegations that he does not want to play.

“When I see people saying, ‘He doesn’t want to play’ – I’ve done way too much for this city, putting myself at risk, for people to be saying that,” Embiid stated, as reported by Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports. His comments highlight the emotional toll the scrutiny has taken on him, especially after dedicating so much to his team and community.

Hayes had remarked on Embiid’s reported lack of fitness at the start of training camp, suggesting that he arrived out of shape and was unable to prepare for the season adequately. In a controversial statement, Hayes wrote, “to minimize the risk of further injuries and to increase his chances of actually making it through an entire season… the Sixers have instituted a personalized fat camp.”

In response, Embiid did not hold back: “I do think it’s bullshit… I’ve done way too much for this f—–g city to be treated like this.” His passionate defense underscores the commitment he has made to the franchise and its fans, particularly during challenging times.

As of now, Embiid has not played in the current season. Last year, he missed 29 games due to meniscus surgery but made a comeback in the playoffs and represented the United States in the Olympics. This season, he was a full participant in practice for the first time on Friday, alongside new teammate Paul George, who is also sidelined. However, both players will remain unavailable for the upcoming game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Sixers currently sit at 1-3 after a recent loss to the Detroit Pistons. In a related development, the NBA fined the team $100,000 for making public statements that did not align with Embiid’s health status, violating the league’s player participation policy.
