In a fiery post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump vehemently rejected allegations of cognitive decline, labeling them as “fake news” in a lengthy statement posted on Sunday. Critics have raised concerns about the 76-year-old’s mental acuity in light of apparent verbal stumbles and conspiracy-laden speeches.
“I am not cognitively impaired, despite the Fake News Media’s narrative to the contrary,” Trump asserted in his social media post.
Trump sought to quell doubts by referencing his performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test (MoCA), a screening tool used to detect early signs of dementia. He claimed to have not only passed the test but to have done so exceptionally well during his annual physical exam while in office. “Not only did I ace it, I aced it so well that the doctors were amazed,” Trump declared.
However, experts note that while a perfect score on the MoCA suggests the absence of severe impairment, it does not measure cognitive abilities beyond basic function. Trump has previously boasted about acing the MoCA and has insinuated, without evidence, that President Joe Biden could not pass the same test.
In the Truth Social post, Trump reiterated false claims about the 2020 election being rigged and stolen, asserting, “I know the 2020 Election was Rigged and Stolen, and have all of the evidence to prove it.” He also took a swipe at Biden’s mental fitness, stating, “Biden is the one that is cognitively impaired, not me!”
The former president’s statement comes ahead of a scheduled news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate on January 6th, the two-year anniversary of the Capitol insurrection. Trump is expected to use the event to perpetuate conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
Critics argue that Trump’s continued denial of the election results and embrace of conspiracy theories may indicate a detachment from reality. Presidential historian Michael Beschloss commented on Trump’s “increasingly erratic outbursts,” suggesting they raise questions about his mental state.
Despite concerns, some experts believe that Trump’s cognitive decline, if present, does not appear severe at this point. Dr. Bandy X. Lee, a psychiatrist at Yale School of Medicine, noted, “He is still able to communicate his thoughts, however warped they may be.” Dr. Lee cautioned that unchecked underlying neurological conditions could lead to continued deterioration over time.
As the debate over Trump’s mental acuity intensifies, the former president remains resolute. In his latest Truth Social statement, he affirmed his commitment to combatting what he perceives as “fake news” regarding his cognitive health.
“The Lamestream Media is pushing this narrative because they know Sleepy Joe is the one with cognitive issues, not me,” Trump wrote. “My mind is as sharp as it has ever been. I proved that by acing the Montreal Cognitive Test, getting a perfect score. Something Biden could never do!”
