Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper delivered a chilling response to recent remarks by Donald Trump regarding the use of military force. In a recent interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Esper emphasized that the former president’s words about deploying the military against political opponents should “absolutely” be taken seriously.
Esper, who served under Trump during his presidency, pointed out that Trump has previously discussed such ideas, particularly during his first term. “Trump has spoken about this before,” Esper reminded viewers, referencing Trump’s desire for retribution against those he perceives as adversaries.
When Collins asked if Esper feared Trump, as the GOP presidential nominee, might attempt to use the National Guard or military forces against U.S. citizens, Esper replied with concern. “Yes, I do. Of course,” he said. This fear is rooted in Esper’s firsthand experience during the summer of 2020 when Trump expressed interest in deploying the National Guard to manage protests in cities like Chicago, Portland, and Seattle.
Esper also recounted how, in June 2020, Trump allegedly wanted to activate active-duty military personnel to suppress protests following the police killing of George Floyd. “That’s what equally concerns me about his comment, the potential use of the military in these situations,” Esper added.
Trump and Esper had a turbulent relationship during their time in office, culminating in Trump’s firing of Esper following the 2020 election. Trump took to social media, then known as Twitter, to announce Esper’s termination.
Looking ahead, Esper has cautioned the public about what to expect from a possible second Trump presidency. He has previously warned that Trump’s leadership could result in the slow erosion of global order and the norms that have contributed to decades of prosperity and growth.
