In a bold move, EXO members Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen have filed for the termination of their exclusive contracts with SM Entertainment, citing concerns over unfair earnings and the oppressive nature of their agreements. The artists, represented by Law Firm LIN, have taken the initiative to challenge what they believe are “slave contracts” imposed by the major entertainment agency.
On June 1, Law Firm LIN officially announced that termination notices had been sent to SM Entertainment on behalf of Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen. The catalyst behind this decision was the artists’ request for detailed records of their earnings and payments between March and May. A total of seven requests were submitted, seeking clarity and transparency in their financial arrangements. However, SM Entertainment allegedly refused to disclose the requested information, leaving the members disillusioned.
The controversy deepens as it is revealed that SM Entertainment has a history of coercing its artists into signing excessively long exclusive contracts. Initially, EXO members committed to contracts lasting 12 to 13 years. Yet, recently, the agency reportedly pressured the artists into premature contract renewals, effectively extending the duration to a staggering 17 to 18 years. Such practices have ignited accusations of “slave contracts” within the entertainment industry.
Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen, driven by their concerns for fellow artists under SM Entertainment’s management, have chosen to take legal action against the agency. Their decision aims to shed light on the unjust treatment they and others have endured. By acting as spokespersons, they hope to challenge the existing laws surrounding exclusive contracts and protect the rights of artists in the industry.

CBX decided to sue because
– SM can’t provide statement of the earnings even they asked for 7th times
– SM provided slave contract more than 10 years ( Xiumin and Chen have more years as they are initially part of EXO-M) pic.twitter.com/7QMbnsPt9y

The lawsuit filed by EXO’s members signals a significant turning point in the relationship between artists and entertainment agencies. It raises questions about the extent of control and power held by these entities, as well as the need for reform within the industry. As the legal battle unfolds, the outcome will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the rights and working conditions of artists not only within SM Entertainment but across the entire entertainment landscape.
With Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen leading the charge, the struggle against “slave contracts” is gaining momentum. Their actions demonstrate a collective determination to fight for fairness, transparency, and improved conditions for all artists in the Korean entertainment industry.
