Report released by LeakXtra on Monday, January 8, 2024, Chinese commentators have alleged that the United States is interfering in their political affairs by providing military support to Taiwan. Warning of swift, accurate, powerful, and painful responses, these claims were articulated in an editorial by the Global Times, an English-language publication established by the Chinese government for Western audiences.
The editorial, published on Sunday, accused the U.S. of engaging in ‘deplorable and dangerous’ interference in Taiwan, prompting the Chinese government to impose sanctions on five American defense companies, including the freezing of their assets in China. These sanctions, revealed over the weekend just before Taiwan’s elections, have raised concerns about potential Chinese influence in the electoral process.
This reaction appears to be linked to a mid-December 2023 sale of U.S. equipment worth $300 million aimed at supporting Taiwan’s tactical information systems. Notably, China had previously imposed sanctions on major American defense corporations in October 2020, including Lockheed Martin, Boeing Defense, and Raytheon, in response to substantial arms sales to Taiwan.
Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the U.S. State Department has consistently characterized Taiwan as a ‘leading democracy’ and emphasized a strong unofficial relationship. The Global Times commentary, titled ‘Beijing will act more swiftly, accurately, powerfully to strike those arming Taiwan painfully,’ argued that U.S. arms sales to Taiwan constitute direct and dangerous intervention in the Taiwan issue, violating the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués.
The article criticized the U.S. for alleged hypocrisy and betrayal, asserting that despite recent affirmations of the U.S. government’s one-China policy during a meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping, the arms sales contradicted these commitments. Describing the sales as a ‘severe illness’ causing harm to China-U.S. relations, the commentary warned that the accelerated U.S. strategy to arm Taiwan poses a substantial threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.
Furthermore, the article emphasized that Beijing vehemently opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and that this opposition will not be limited to verbal expressions. The Chinese Foreign Ministry identified BAE Systems Land and Armament, Alliant Techsystems Operation, AeroVironment, ViaSat, and Data Link Solutions as defense companies facing sanctions.
While acknowledging that these companies may not be as widely recognized as previously sanctioned ones like Lockheed Martin, the Global Times suggested that this reflects the precision of China’s countermeasures and its capability to inflict targeted pain. The announced sanctions, freezing properties and restricting transactions with targeted U.S. defense companies in China, are expected to deliver a significant blow to American business interests, though their effectiveness is questioned as American defense contractors typically do not engage in sales to China, rendering the sanctions largely symbolic.
The U.S.-China relationship encountered challenges last year, despite diplomatic efforts, with mutual suspicion persisting over issues such as a diplomatic furor over a spy balloon accusation, concerns about China’s human rights abuses, and fears of challenges to American technological and trade interests. The primary source of tension remains China’s stance on Taiwan, particularly concerning American arms deals with Taipei.
