Republican House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan finds himself under scrutiny as his attack on Hunter Biden’s response to a subpoena takes an unexpected twist.

Jordan publicly criticized Hunter Biden for suggesting a willingness to testify in a public hearing rather than adhering to a subpoena, citing the cooperation of Donald Trump Jr. who underwent two depositions with Congress. Jordan questioned why Biden couldn’t follow suit.

Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, countered by expressing his client’s eagerness to testify publicly, aiming to prevent selective leaks that might manipulate public perception. This drew the ire of Jordan and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, who insisted that Biden must first comply with the subpoena for a closed-door deposition scheduled for December 13, as reported by Newsweek on November 29, 2023.

Despite Biden’s offer for a public testimony at a later stage, Jordan and Comer accused him of attempting to evade the terms of the subpoena, asserting that he sought to set his own rules.

Criticism swiftly emerged against Jordan’s stance, with some pointing to his own defiance of a subpoena related to the now-closed House investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. Democrats highlighted the irony of Jordan criticizing Biden’s response to a subpoena when he had faced similar accusations of non-compliance in the past.

Daniel Goldman, a Democratic representative, seized on this inconsistency, offering Jordan the opportunity to testify in his preferred manner in response to his comments on Biden’s subpoena compliance.

Other voices echoed the sentiment, drawing parallels between Biden’s willingness to comply and the refusals of figures like Steve Bannon and Jordan himself when subpoenaed. They emphasized the apparent contradiction in Republican reluctance to allow Biden’s appearance despite his expressed readiness to comply.

The ongoing saga surrounding Hunter Biden’s subpoena is part of a broader investigation into the financial and business dealings of the Biden family.

When the subpoenas were initially issued to Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s brother James, former business associate Rob Walker, and others, Hunter Biden’s attorney labeled the investigation a “political stunt.” Abbe Lowell expressed Hunter Biden’s eagerness to discuss matters publicly but at the right time and in an appropriate forum.

Jim Jordan previously faced accusations of hypocrisy regarding the subpoena issue when the subpoenas were first issued to Biden family members. Lowell dismissed the investigation’s claims as baseless and reiterated his client’s readiness to address these matters publicly when the time is right.
