Former President Donald Trump vehemently criticized special counsel Jack Smith’s recent motion seeking to prevent Trump from introducing conspiracy theories about the January 6 attack or complaining about selective prosecution.
During an interview with John Solomon of Real America’s Voice on Wednesday, Trump fiercely objected to Smith’s motion, suggesting it aimed to shield House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as reported by Raw Story.
Trump claimed that the motion indicated Smith’s efforts to “defend Nancy Pelosi,” as Trump intended to present evidence suggesting Pelosi’s responsibility for the January 6 attack, stating, “we offered them 10,000 troops or National Guard, whatever they wanted.”
However, Trump’s assertion has been refuted on multiple occasions, including by his former Secretary of Defense. Furthermore, its connection to Smith’s charges against Trump for conspiring to overturn the 2020 election rather than inciting the January 6 attack is questioned.
Despite this, Trump proceeded to highlight the crowd size at his “Stop the Steal” rally on the opposite side of the National Mall from the January 6 incident, labeling it as “the largest number of people I’ve ever spoken to… nobody ever talks about that.” Simultaneously, he launched a scathing attack on Smith, describing him as “a deranged human being, unattractive inside and out.”
In addition to criticizing Smith, Trump aimed his criticism at the former House January 6 Select Committee, accusing them of systematically discarding and erasing essential information. He alleged that the committee eliminated evidence pointing to Pelosi’s failure to deploy troops.
Trump’s claims align with Rep. Barry Loudermilk’s (R-GA) assertions that the committee neglected to preserve depositions and ended investigations into Capitol security. Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-MS), however, vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that the committee adhered to all legal requirements for evidence preservation.
