A recent YouGov poll indicates that over half of Americans approve of the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling barring former President Donald Trump from the state’s primary ballot. The decision, based on the 14th Amendment, has garnered support from Democrats and a substantial proportion of independents. According to the survey, 54% of respondents either strongly or somewhat approved of the court’s ruling, while 35% expressed disapproval.
Breaking down the results by political affiliation, nearly two-thirds (63%) of Democrats strongly approved of barring Trump from the primary ballot, with an additional 21% somewhat approving. Independents were more divided, but 48% supported the decision, compared to 35% who disapproved.
The Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling is grounded in the interpretation of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals from holding public office if they have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the Constitution. The court is questioning whether Trump’s actions leading up to and during the January 6 Capitol riots constitute insurrection or rebellion.
Despite being barred from Colorado’s primary ballot, Trump has the option to seek review from the U.S. Supreme Court. The highest court in the country will ultimately determine whether Trump’s actions can be considered incitement and whether arguments based on the 14th Amendment can prevent him from participating in the state’s primary election.
