A compelling analysis, former national security affairs professor Tom Nichols challenges the prevailing narrative that Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) followers are the “forgotten” people of America, as reported by Raw Story on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Instead, Nichols contends that Trump’s base, much like the former president himself, is motivated by a desire for revenge.

According to Nichols, Trump and right-wing media played a significant role in fueling the anger and resentment of older, white middle-class voters. In the face of electoral defeats, Trump and his media allies consistently fed the GOP base a diet of rage, prompting these voters to seek retribution against their fellow citizens.

The anticipation among these individuals that the 2016 election would bring them recognition and respect was thwarted by Trump’s presidency, subjecting them to ego-bruising rebukes from other voters.

McKay Coppins, a writer at The Atlantic, supports Nichols’ argument. Coppins attended a Trump rally in Iowa and spoke with Kris, a 71-year-old retired nurse and avid viewer of Trump rallies on platforms like Rumble and FrankSpeech. Kris expressed unwavering support for the former president and even suggested that the military might need to intervene if Democrats were to “steal” the 2024 election.

Nichols raises a crucial question: What motivates seemingly ordinary people to fervently support Trump’s agenda, to the extent of advocating for the military to seize control? Dismissing the notion that these individuals are merely “forgotten” voters left behind by globalization and leftist political culture, Nichols argues that this explanation lacks empirical sustainability and accuracy.

The former professor criticizes both the media and politicians for perpetuating this false narrative, despite its lack of evidence. He condemns empathetic reporters and politicians who, in their quest for understanding, failed to challenge the shocking and un-American sentiments expressed by Trump’s supporters.

Nichols also points out that MAGA voters have constructed an alternate reality to cope with their string of electoral losses, offering explanations for events like the 2018 Democratic-wave election, Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, and the absence of the predicted “red wave” in 2022.

Antiracism educator Tim Wise echoes Nichols’ sentiments, describing MAGA faithful as mean-spirited and vengeful, rather than decent and misunderstood individuals who have been left behind.

While Nichols’ analysis provides thought-provoking insights, it is essential to recognize that it represents his perspective and interpretation of the motivations behind Trump’s loyal following. The complexities of political dynamics and individual beliefs within the MAGA movement extend beyond the scope of this piece. As the political landscape evolves, understanding the motivations and concerns of different voter groups remains crucial for fostering dialogue and addressing the underlying issues that divide the nation.
