House Republican leaders overseeing the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden have intensified their efforts to bring Hunter Biden into the spotlight, insisting on both closed-door and public testimonies, according to a report by the Daily Caller on November 29, 2023.
Republican Leaders Demand Compliance
The leaders spearheading the inquiry, namely House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, have unequivocally communicated their demand for Hunter Biden’s compliance with the Oversight Committee’s subpoena for a deposition scheduled on December 13.
Chairman Comer, addressing reporters at a Republican leadership press conference, emphasized the committee’s strategy to initially interview and depose witnesses before considering a public testimony from Hunter Biden.
“Our committees will first interview and depose witnesses,” stated Comer during the press conference. “We then, of course, would welcome Hunter Biden to testify at a public hearing at a future date,” he added.
Broad Support for Deposition and Public Testimony
This sentiment was echoed by Chairman Jordan, who expressed support for both a closed-door deposition and an open hearing, stating, “We will have Hunter Biden in a deposition, and frankly, I think in an open hearing. I think that would be great.”
Chairman Smith underscored the significance of the congressional subpoena, emphasizing Hunter Biden’s obligation to undergo a deposition on December 13. Smith anticipates that the opportunity for Hunter Biden to testify publicly will arise in the future.
“The congressional subpoena he received was not a suggestion, and he is required to sit for a deposition on December 13th. I expect he will have the opportunity to testify in a public setting in the future,” said Chairman Smith.
Focus on Impeachment Inquiry and Hunter Biden’s Business Dealings
During the press conference, the Republican leaders presented evidence related to the impeachment inquiry, with a specific focus on Joe Biden’s role in Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings. Additionally, they addressed IRS whistleblower testimony alleging favoritism toward Hunter Biden during the Department of Justice’s investigation.
IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, who testified behind closed doors to the Ways and Means Committee, later presented their allegations publicly. Transcripts revealed private testimonies from DOJ and IRS officials involved in the Hunter Biden case.
Special counsel David Weiss, leading the Hunter Biden case, confirmed key aspects of the IRS whistleblower testimony in a November appearance before the Judiciary Committee.
Hunter Biden’s Legal Challenges and Defense
Hunter Biden, indicted in September on federal gun charges and currently pleading not guilty, faces ongoing scrutiny. His tax affairs are under investigation by a California grand jury.
In response to the demand for a closed-door deposition, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe D. Lowell, expressed reluctance, citing concerns about the manipulation of facts and misinformation. Lowell proposed a public proceeding to ensure transparency and prevent selective leaks.
“We have seen you use closed-door sessions to manipulate, even distort the facts and misinform the public. We, therefore, propose opening the door,” stated Lowell. “A public proceeding would prevent selective leaks, manipulated transcripts, doctored exhibits, or one-sided press statements,” he added.
Ongoing Investigation and Additional Deposition Requests
The impeachment inquiry extends beyond Hunter Biden, with House Republicans also seeking depositions from Hunter Biden’s uncle, James Biden, and several former business associates. At the time of publication, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe D. Lowell, had not responded to requests for comment.
The developments surrounding the impeachment inquiry continue to unfold, with the focus intensifying on Hunter Biden’s involvement and the broader implications for the Biden administration.
