Michigan community narrowly escaped disaster after a chilling threat posted on Snapchat led to the arrest of one suspect—and a manhunt for another—in what police say was a planned mass shooting at a school graduation ceremony.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday, June 3, during a packed celebration for the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac, held at a local business venue. While deputies were already on site handling a separate physical altercation, a concerned individual stepped forward with critical information: a family member had seen a social media post threatening to “shoot up” the event.
That tip sparked an urgent investigation, and what officers discovered moments later confirmed the threat was dangerously real. Two loaded guns, both fitted with high-capacity magazines, were found hidden under cars in the parking lot—just steps away from where families had gathered.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, this swift intervention “probably prevented a mass shooting.” The weapons and the suspects’ disturbing history with firearms suggest the community came frighteningly close to a tragic repeat of past school violence.
Authorities arrested 19-year-old Deahveon Shamar-James Whaley, who now faces serious charges. But 20-year-old Jamarion Jaryante Hardiman remains on the loose, and police are urging the public to report any information about his whereabouts immediately by calling 911.
Though neither suspect is enrolled at the Arts and Technology Academy—which serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade—both are believed to have personal ties to individuals at the event. Investigators say the motive may be linked to ongoing disputes within the community, and that both men have known records involving violent behavior and illegal weapons.
Sheriff Bouchard didn’t mince words when describing how close this came to becoming another mass casualty event. Oakland County still carries the scars of the Oxford High School shooting in 2021, where four lives were lost.
