Former President Donald Trump has reportedly expressed openness to the idea of serving as the interim House Speaker, according to Fox News host Sean Hannity. This news comes as a number of House Republicans and conservative leaders are considering the unconventional move.
Hannity revealed the possibility during a recent broadcast, stating, “McCarthy will not seek the speakership again. Now, sources telling me at this hour some House Republicans have been in contact with and have started an effort to draft former President Donald Trump to be the next speaker. And I have been told that President Trump might be open to helping the Republican Party, at least in the short term, if necessary, if it’s needed.”
The idea of Trump taking up the role of House Speaker has been circulating since the initial Speaker vote earlier this year. In a surprising turn of events, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) nominated Trump during one of the early ballots in January, leaving many House members stunned.
Just hours after the ousting of Kevin McCarthy, U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) announced his intention to nominate the former president to fill the vacant position, adding momentum to the unconventional proposal.
When asked for his stance on the matter, U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) expressed his enthusiasm for the idea. Jordan, who has also received nominations to replace McCarthy from his GOP colleagues, stated that a potential bid would ultimately be “up to the conference.” He affirmed his support for Trump, whether it be as House Speaker or in a different capacity.
Former White House chief strategist and staunch Trump ally Steve Bannon has given his enthusiastic endorsement to the concept, emphasizing that Trump’s role as Speaker could bring unity to the Republican Party.
Bannon argued, “I think that as people think it through, for your consideration, we should think about President Donald J. Trump. So given that Trump is essentially the nominee, who better to bring this party together and to do it now? They said, well, we can lose the House, we did, let’s bring it together now. Let’s bring it together now.”
It’s worth noting that House rules do allow for members to nominate individuals who are not members of Congress for the position of House Speaker, making this unconventional proposal within the realm of possibility.
The potential for Donald Trump to step into the role of House Speaker has ignited both intrigue and debate within the Republican Party, as the party considers its future direction and leadership.
