Recent report by Fox News on Saturday, May 11, 2024, 48-year-old Edrick Lamont Faust from Georgia faced charges for the murder of 23-year-old law student Tara Louise Baker, along with accusations of setting her apartment on fire 23 years ago. The denial of bond for Faust in Athens follows his arrest on Thursday, marking a significant breakthrough in a long-pending cold case that has troubled the community for decades.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) disclosed Faust’s charges, including murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, arson, and other serious offenses. Following his arrest, Faust was promptly placed in the Athens-Clarke County Jail.
The tragic incident dates back to January 19, 2001, when emergency responders were alerted to a fire at Baker’s apartment, later determined to be arson. Baker, a first-year law student at the time, was discovered deceased within her residence.
The arrest of Faust comes after relentless efforts by the GBI’s cold case unit, in collaboration with Athens-Clarke County police, who meticulously reviewed and analyzed evidence in the ongoing investigation into Baker’s death.
“Tara Louise Baker was a dedicated student with a promising future,” remarked GBI Director Chris Hosey. “Her life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. While this arrest cannot bring her back, we hope it brings some peace to the Baker family.”
Baker, who would have turned 24 years old the day after her tragic demise, was known for her academic excellence. Reports indicate that she graduated Cum Laude from Georgia College in Milledgeville in 1998 with two bachelor’s degrees.
Chief Jerry Saulters of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department expressed his thoughts on the arrest, acknowledging the enduring impact of the case on both the family and law enforcement.
Governor Brian Kemp also commended the dedication of investigators, citing legislative actions like the Coleman-Baker Act aimed at ensuring justice for victims and their families.
