In a stunning revelation, a report delving into President Biden’s cognitive abilities has ignited concerns among House Democrats, who fear that the focus on Biden’s age could pose challenges in their bid to secure control of the lower chamber in the upcoming November elections.

Special counsel Robert Hur’s report, disclosed on Thursday, has portrayed President Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,” triggering outrage among Democrats who accuse Hur of injecting political bias into his findings.

Democratic leaders swiftly distanced themselves from Hur’s assessments, emphasizing that his mandate was to investigate potential crimes rather than opine on Biden’s age-related fitness for office. Despite their disagreement, they acknowledge that the report has provided Republicans with ammunition, painting Biden as unfit due to his age—a narrative that could prove damaging in the lead-up to the elections.

Former Democratic aides and Representative Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) criticized Hur for making “gratuitous insulting remarks” without bringing criminal charges. Huffman acknowledged the potential damage the report could inflict on Democrats, stating, “It’s not fair, but this narrative is going to be with us whether we like it or not and it is worrisome.”

Hur’s report concluded that while Biden had “willfully retained and disclosed classified materials,” his actions did not warrant criminal charges. However, the assertion that a jury would likely not convict Biden due to his age and poor memory underscores lingering concerns about the president’s fitness for office.

Addressing fellow Democrats at their annual strategy retreat, Biden focused on the absence of charges and his cooperation with the investigation, drawing a contrast with former President Trump’s legal troubles.

Yet, during a subsequent press conference, Biden’s efforts to contain the fallout turned confrontational as he clashed with reporters over questions about his health and mental fitness. The combative exchange drew criticism from some Democratic allies, including Representative Adam Smith (D-Wash.), who deemed Biden’s approach ineffective.

Republicans swiftly capitalized on Hur’s findings, portraying Biden as a national security risk and advocating for his removal from office. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) circulated a fundraising email asserting that Biden’s mishandling of classified information rendered him unfit for the presidency.

While most Democrats publicly rallied behind Biden, pointing out Trump’s own age and verbal miscues, some sought to downplay the significance of Hur’s report, framing it as a transient episode in the broader discourse on age and leadership.

As Congress gears up for key legislative decisions and a special election in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, observers anticipate that Hur’s report will be overshadowed by subsequent developments. Regardless of its immediate impact, its long-term repercussions remain uncertain as Democrats navigate the evolving political landscape ahead of November.

“These things last until the next thing,” concluded the former Democratic aide. “The election will dominate everything. Win or lose, for Democrats, it’ll dominate everything. And it’ll change the subject.”
