Hoffman Estates, Illinois – The community of Hoffman Estates is in mourning after a devastating crash claimed the lives of D’Shaun Tudela and Amelia Mazeikis, a beloved couple who had recently graduated from high school. The incident, which occurred near Barrington and Higgins roads, has left their families and friends devastated. Authorities have since charged Deni Rubio, an Elgin man, with multiple offenses, including reckless homicide, aggravated DUI resulting in death, and attempting to disarm a peace officer.
The families of the victims gathered at a Schaumburg church on Sunday evening to remember and honor their loved ones. Krystal Tudela, D’Shaun’s mother, shared the pain of losing her son and the impact it has had on their family. She described D’Shaun as a talented chef, with aspirations of pursuing a career in Japanese cuisine.
“He had goals and accomplishments. He had a path,” Krystal expressed. “This table will never be the same.”
D’Shaun was seated in the passenger seat, with Amelia driving him to work on Saturday morning when tragedy struck. Another vehicle reportedly ran a red light at the intersection of Higgins and Barrington roads, colliding with their car. Krystal emphasized the senselessness of such a reckless act, emphasizing the devastating consequences it has brought upon their lives.
Krystal shared that D’Shaun and Amelia had recently graduated from Schaumburg High School and were a loving couple until their untimely end. They were also actively involved in a youth program at Our Saviour’s United Methodist Church in Schaumburg. Despite the immense pain, Krystal finds solace in the hope that her son and Amelia were together, holding hands and at peace during their final moments.
The news of the tragic accident reached Krystal while she was traveling back from Texas, leaving her feeling helpless and far away from her son in his time of need. She was met with support from strangers who comforted her as she received the devastating news.
Authorities have reported that two other groups involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
