Dream vacation in the Caribbean turned into a nightmare when a woman lost both her hands in a brutal shark attack—while her husband desperately fought to save her.

The horrifying incident occurred on Blue Hills Beach in Providenciales, the main island of the Turks and Caicos archipelago. The 55-year-old tourist was reportedly attempting to snap a photo of a massive shark when the creature suddenly lunged at her. Witnesses say the attack happened in shallow water, just moments before chaos erupted.

Authorities believe the predator, estimated to be between six and nine feet long, was likely a bull or tiger shark—both known for their aggressive nature. As the beast clamped down, the woman’s husband sprang into action, trying to fend it off, but the damage had already been done.

Tragically, the woman suffered severe wounds to her thigh and lost both hands in the attack. Emergency responders rushed her to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre, where doctors had to amputate one hand at the wrist and the other at the forearm. She was later airlifted for further medical treatment.

Onlookers described the terrifying moment, recalling how the victim’s family rushed to stop the bleeding with makeshift bandages. Despite her devastating injuries, the woman was reportedly able to walk back to shore after the attack.

“That shark bite victim lost both her hands and some of her forearm. Her husband tried to fight it off,” one witness told Magnetic Media. Another added, “I was there for 40 minutes, and it was still lingering.”

Following the attack, the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources (DECR) swiftly issued a beach closure notice from Thompson’s Cove Beach to Froggies ATV, fearing the shark might still be lurking in the area. The closure was lifted two days later after officials determined that the predator had moved into deeper waters.

Authorities later confirmed that the tourist had attempted to engage with the shark before the attack, likely in an effort to take a close-up picture. The DECR has since issued a stern warning to visitors, emphasizing the dangers of interacting with marine wildlife.

“Respect marine life,” officials urged, reminding tourists that wild animals can be unpredictable—and deadly.
