During his time in office, former President Donald Trump explored the idea of purchasing Greenland from Denmark, a move initially perceived as a joke. Trump’s unexpected interest in acquiring Greenland surprised many, with his administration likening it to a significant real estate transaction. Confirming his personal involvement in investigating the possibility, Trump mentioned, “It’s just something we’ve talked about. Denmark essentially owns it, and strategically, it’s interesting.”

However, this proposition faced opposition both in Greenland and Denmark. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, firmly stated that Greenland was not for sale, emphasizing its autonomy. She expressed her hope that Trump’s remarks were not meant seriously.

Despite the pushback, the Trump administration pursued the idea, with White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow mentioning the President’s interest in exploring a potential purchase, drawing comparisons to Trump’s real estate ventures.

While the Greenland government maintained a diplomatic stance, stating the island was not available for sale, other politicians and international figures ridiculed the proposal. Former Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen labeled it as an ill-timed April Fool’s joke, while criticism from former NATO ambassador Ivo H. Daalder highlighted concerns over America’s credibility under Trump’s leadership.
