In September, Megyn Kelly asked Donald Trump about the whereabouts of his wife, Melania Trump, who had always been a dutiful spouse until recently.
Kelly and Trump had a long-awaited interview eight years after their public clash over Trump’s comments during a presidential debate. During this reunion, Kelly couldn’t resist asking the question on everyone’s mind: “We haven’t seen much of Melania lately, how’s she doing?”
Trump, in a surprisingly diplomatic response, described Melania as “strong” and “even-keeled.” He emphasized that Melania’s ability to maintain an air of mystery is one of her strengths, saying, “She doesn’t need to be out there. She has confidence. She has a lot of self-confidence.”
The former first lady, Melania, has been noticeably absent from her husband’s 2024 presidential campaign. She has not made appearances alongside Trump during his multiple court hearings, sparking speculation about her whereabouts.
Some have suggested that Melania chose to step back from politics and campaigning, wanting to lead a private life with her son. Ron Filipkowski, an attorney and former federal prosecutor, shared this belief on a Meidas Touch YouTube livestream, saying, “The reports were that she was angry and she wanted nothing more to do with politics… and nothing more to do with campaigning. She wanted out and wanted to be a private person with her son.”
Newsweek reached out to Melania Trump’s representatives via email for comment but received no response.
Former White House Press Secretary and Melania’s aide, Stephanie Grisham, provided a different perspective, explaining that Melania’s absence from court was due to her being “too busy” to attend. Grisham stated, “She is saying in her mind that this is his issue… He doesn’t need me there to prop him up; I am too busy to go with him. That is who she is.”
Melania made a rare public appearance in April, joining her husband at an event at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The following month, she briefly spoke to Fox News, pledging her support for Trump’s 2024 presidential bid: “We look forward to restoring hope for the future and leading America with love and strength.
However, her public presence remains limited, with occasional social media posts primarily focusing on patriotic content or promoting her BeBest foundation, an initiative she launched during her time as first lady to address key children’s issues.
Speculation surrounding Melania’s absence includes anger over her husband’s legal issues and resentment over his alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels. Melania’s renegotiation of her prenuptial agreement with Trump has also fueled rumors. Some reports suggest she did so due to concerns about her husband’s legal fees depleting his finances.
Public relations expert Jane Owen suggests that Melania’s low-profile strategy is wise. Owen explained, “If I was her publicist, I would be suggesting the same tactic. The less she comments or is seen to be supportive or unsupportive, the more room she has to maneuver.” Owen believes that Melania, as a “savvy woman who understands the power of the spotlight,” will make a significant impact when she chooses to reemerge, regardless of her husband’s legal and political fate.
Melania, born outside the U.S. in Slovenia, became the second first lady with this distinction. She pursued a modeling career before marrying Trump in 2005, and they share one child, Barron, who is 17 years old. Melania’s initial decision to stay in New York while Barron completed the school year sparked early speculation that she was not eager to assume the role of first lady.
