Former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has recently stirred controversy with allegations that former President Barack Obama is covertly controlling Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign. McCarthy’s claims, made during an interview on 770 WABC’s “The Cats Roundtable,” have ignited significant debate about the inner workings of Harris’s bid for the presidency.

McCarthy asserts that key figures from Obama’s political circle, including David Plouffe and other influential advisers, are now deeply involved in Harris’s campaign. He claimed, “If you’re watching the campaign now, some of Obama’s key people, such as David Plouffe and others, are now working on the campaign. You’re getting the Obamas shifting from running the White House to now running this campaign.”

David Plouffe, who was Obama’s campaign manager during the 2008 election and later served as a top White House adviser, is reportedly playing a major role in shaping Harris’s campaign strategy. The New York Post reported on August 11, 2024, that Plouffe’s involvement is a notable development, given his extensive experience and influence within Democratic circles.

Additionally, Stephanie Cutter, who was deputy campaign manager for Obama’s 2012 re-election, has joined Harris’s team as a senior adviser for strategy messaging. Jennifer Palmieri, a veteran of Obama’s campaign team and former director of communications for both Obama’s White House and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, is also serving as a senior adviser for Harris.

These appointments suggest a strategic effort to replicate successful tactics from Obama’s campaigns, indicating a continuity of Democratic campaign strategies. Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, who previously served as campaign chairwoman for both Obama and Biden’s 2020 campaigns, has also been engaged by Harris’s campaign, further reinforcing the deep pool of Democratic expertise being utilized.

Despite these appointments, a former top adviser to Obama has dismissed McCarthy’s claims as exaggerated. The source argued that the involvement of seasoned Democratic strategists across various campaigns is common and that Obama’s role is not as direct as suggested. “President Obama will get involved if Harris asks him to,” the source said, downplaying the notion of a covert campaign takeover.

McCarthy’s comments have sparked discussions about Obama’s influence in contemporary Democratic politics. While some view the involvement of Obama’s former advisers as a strategic advantage, others worry that it could overshadow Harris’s own campaign narrative. Critics argue that framing Harris’s campaign as being heavily influenced by Obama could be a strategic move by McCarthy to undermine her candidacy and appeal to voters wary of political dynasties and perceived puppet strings.

As the 2024 presidential race intensifies, the implications of McCarthy’s allegations are yet to be fully understood. Whether Obama is playing a significant behind-the-scenes role or merely offering occasional advice, the presence of his former top advisers in Harris’s campaign will likely influence how voters perceive her candidacy. The evolving dynamics of the campaign will continue to be a focal point of discussion as the election approaches, with both supporters and critics scrutinizing the impact of these influential figures on American politics.
