Tawfic, born to Palestinian parents and raised in the suburbs of New Orleans, had temporarily moved to the West Bank in May to reconnect with relatives. His grandfather’s pursuit of the “American dream” served as the cornerstone of Tawfic’s life.

Sherean Murad, assistant principal at the Muslim Academy in Gretna, fondly remembered Tawfic as “very polite, very respectful, very intelligent.” The shocking news of his untimely death left the Louisiana community in grief and disbelief.

Mohammad Abdelwahhab, Tawfic’s second cousin and a medical assistant in New Orleans, emphasized the profound impact of the tragedy on the family and community, noting Tawfic’s youth and promising future.

Tawfic’s impending graduation and pursuit of his goals were cut short. Friends and relatives gathered to mourn his passing at an open house, sharing memories over traditional fare.

Close cousin Tawfik Abdeljabar, 23, reflected on their camaraderie, engaging in playful debates. Zarifa Abdeljabar reminisced about shared moments in the West Bank, emphasizing the serenity of the mountains.

Tawfic’s untimely death is framed within a religious context, designating him a martyr. Zarifa referred to him as a “warrior of God,” highlighting the religious significance of his passing.

A vigil at Masjid Omar in Harvey, La., drew hundreds, with many donning the Palestinian kaffiyeh scarf in solidarity. Nabil Abukhader, president of Masjid Omar, urged the Biden administration to advocate more actively for the rights of Palestinian Americans, emphasizing the need to protect children from the devastating cycle of violence.

As family members mourned, two of Tawfic’s uncles and his older brother rushed to the West Bank upon hearing the news. Amidst the grief, life continued as one of Tawfic’s cousins welcomed a new life into the world: a baby boy named Tawfic, with a C, carrying on the memory of the lost young soul.
