Jada Pinkett-Smith reveals a candid and deeply personal side of her life in her upcoming memoir, “Worthy.” In a heartfelt excerpt shared by People on Friday, Smith, 52, opens up about her struggle with depression and the unhappiness she faced within her seemingly perfect marriage to actor Will Smith.
For years, Jada Pinkett-Smith was seen as having it all – the beautiful family, a superstar husband, a lavish lifestyle, fame, and fortune. However, she confessed that, behind the façade, her life was far from happy.
“For two decades, I had been putting on a good face, going with the flow, telling everyone I was okay,” she admitted.
In her memoir, Smith delves into the depths of her internal struggle. She realized that the life she had built and the expectations she had been fulfilling did not lead to the happiness she had anticipated.
“I was slammed by the reality that I’d been checking off boxes meant to define being enough to deserve ‘having it all.’ … Those boxes I’d been checking had not delivered the gifts that had been promised,” Smith shared.
She went on to explain how, on the surface, everything seemed perfect – she followed the societal rules of hard work, sacrifices, and devotion to her family. But in reality, it was all part of an illusion.
“‘On paper,’ it all looked grand,” she noted.
However, Smith emphasized that the happiness she yearned for had not materialized. She had been living a life that lacked a loving relationship, harmony, and peace.
“NOPE. A loving relationship, harmony, peace… that happiness had yet to be delivered,” she revealed.
In a brave revelation, Jada Pinkett Smith burst the bubble of her seemingly perfect Hollywood life, acknowledging that her marriage to Will Smith was far from idyllic at that time.
“Adding to my distress, Will and I weren’t in a good place and hadn’t been for a while. I couldn’t make it right no matter how hard I tried. We couldn’t hear or see each other – at all. Confiding in my close friends seemed unfair to them and to Will and me,” she confessed.
As Thanksgiving approached, Smith’s despair deepened, and she grappled with her own sense of self-worth.
“[B]y Thanksgiving, I’d fallen into despair and wanted to be on this earth less and less. This was not living,” she bravely shared.
Unwelcome feelings of not deserving love added to her internal turmoil, making it even more challenging for her to reconcile the apparent perfection of her life with the inner emptiness she carried.
Jada Pinkett Smith’s forthcoming memoir promises an intimate and honest look into her life, shedding light on the complexities of fame, relationships, and personal struggles. It serves as a reminder that even those who seem to “have it all” may be battling their own inner demons.
