Pastor Travis Decker’s unwavering support for former President Donald Trump encountered a significant test when CNN host Poppy Harlow showcased a video promoted on Trump’s Truth Social website, boldly proclaiming, “God gave us Trump” as America’s chosen leader. This revelation prompted a tense exchange as Harlow probed Decker’s thoughts on a video suggesting divine selection.
As the video played, spotlighting Trump’s promotion of a divine narrative surrounding his presidency, Harlow turned to Pastor Travis Decker. The looming question: did Decker have reservations about a video implying God’s handpicked choice in Trump’s leadership?
Decker’s response aimed to distance himself from the video’s creation, asserting, “He didn’t create it. I don’t think that he thinks that. He posts lots of things, and I think he does it to troll people, honestly.” Despite this deflection, Decker shifted gears to emphasize Trump’s alignment with religious principles, stating, “He has very clearly stated behind the scenes that he is, you know, that he has the fear of God.”
However, Decker admitted that, in his opinion, Trump had room for personal growth in developing a conscience. Nonetheless, he defended Trump’s record as a commendable president, particularly on the issue of abortion.
The interview took an intriguing turn when Tim Lubinus, the executive director of Iowa’s Baptist convention and a supporter of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, joined the conversation. Lubinus expressed concerns about the fervent idolization of Trump by some supporters, stating, “There are some that are way over the top, that almost anything he would do… people would support him. That’s concerning to me, and it is getting close to the definition of idolatry.”
Lubinus’s remarks reflected a growing sentiment among certain circles that unwavering support for Trump bordered on idolatry, questioning the balance between political allegiance and religious principles. The discomfort expressed by Pastor Decker with the video’s narrative highlighted the broader challenge faced by religious leaders seeking to reconcile their spiritual beliefs with political endorsements.
