Jeremy Renner, known for his role as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently shared his feelings about his experience working on the 2012 blockbuster film “The Avengers.” Renner, a member of the original Avengers, expressed frustration about his character being sidelined in the movie.
While “The Avengers” was a massive success worldwide, Renner’s Hawkeye didn’t get the spotlight he deserved in his MCU debut. Unlike later films like “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where Hawkeye’s character was explored in-depth, in the original Avengers movie, he spent a significant portion of the film under Loki’s mind control, which left Renner feeling dissatisfied.
Renner, in an interview with The Guardian, revealed his frustration, saying, “That was my first chance getting to play the character, and I wasn’t really getting to play him at all. ‘Hi, my name’s Clint – bzzzzzzzzz. It was frustrating. I don’t even know at that point how the guy walks and talks, ‘cos he got turned into this other dude. Joss [Whedon] was really apologetic. He had an impossible task trying to fit all those characters into one movie.”
However, things improved for Renner in subsequent MCU films, especially in “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” where Hawkeye’s character was given more depth and backstory, making him a fan-favorite.
Despite some uncertainty about Hawkeye’s future appearances in the MCU, Renner remains open to reprising his role, stating at the Phoenix Fan Fusion event, “If Marvel wants me back, I’ll do it in a heartbeat.”
Fans of Hawkeye and the Avengers will have to wait patiently to see if Renner’s character will return to the big screen as the MCU continues to evolve and introduce new superheroes.
