Testifying from the Grave

In the weeks leading up to her death in 2017, Malinowski gradually weaned herself off pain medication in order to demonstrate to the court that she was of sound mind. With tremendous determination, she spent three hours testifying against Slager, capturing her powerful words on video from her hospital bed.

In the heart-wrenching footage, Malinowski revealed that Slager callously ignored her pleas for help after setting her ablaze. She described the chilling expression of pure evil on his face. Her testimony became the cornerstone of the case against her attacker.

Malinowski’s remarkable story of resilience and courage has now become the subject of MTV’s powerful documentary, “The Fire That Took Her,” available for streaming on Paramount+.

The recorded testimony was played in a Franklin County courtroom in Ohio in 2018 when Slager faced aggravated murder charges. This groundbreaking moment marked the first time in history that a person had testified at their own murder trial. Hearing Malinowski’s compelling words, the court sentenced Slager to life in prison for murder.

A Continuing Fight for Justice

Malinowski’s family, including her daughters Kaylyn and Madison, her sister Danielle Gorman, her brother Patrick Bowes, and her mother Bonnie, have not ceased their pursuit of justice. They have tirelessly advocated for stricter legislation to address assaults involving accelerants that result in severe disfigurement.

Reflecting on her daughter’s incredible strength and perseverance, Bonnie, Malinowski’s mother, affirms, “She endured unimaginable suffering to bring about change for other women. She fought relentlessly for justice.”
