Keanu Reeves, best known for his iconic roles in “The Matrix” and his musical endeavors with Dogstar, has once again made headlines—this time as a 59-year-old hockey player, albeit briefly. On Thursday, the Windsor Spitfires, a junior team in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), revealed that Reeves signed a one-day contract with them, much to the delight of his fans.

The Windsor Spitfires shared the surprising news on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing photos of Reeves with his temporary team. The post highlighted the unique nature of this brief contract, stating, “In a moment of happenstance, the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club were finally able to add this former Ontario Hockey League goalie prospect, turned Dogstar bass player, to their roster with a one-day contract!”

Reeves’ signing was more than just a publicity stunt; it served a charitable purpose. The actor autographed various pieces of merchandise, which the Spitfires will auction off to support the local chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.

Though he won’t be skating with the Spitfires, Reeves’ connection to hockey is deep-rooted. Growing up in Toronto, he played hockey throughout his youth and even considered a professional career, eyeing spots with either the Spitfires or the Toronto Maple Leafs. His shift from hockey to acting remains a subject of discussion—NFL sources have suggested an injury might have derailed his draft prospects, while a 2014 claim from a former teammate implied he might have turned down offers.

In a 2013 Reddit AMA, Reeves expressed his enduring passion for the sport. His dedication to philanthropy is well-documented as well. Following his sister Kim’s leukemia diagnosis in 1991, he established a cancer foundation. Additionally, he participated in a celebrity NHL game in 2003 to support spinal cord injury research.

Even as his sister went into remission in 2010, Reeves’ generosity hasn’t waned. A family friend revealed in 2022, “Keanu’s given away a lot of money and done a lot more for people than most will ever know. He knows how lucky he is.” His humility and commitment to helping others distinguish him in Hollywood, a place where he never takes his success for granted.

Keanu Reeves’ brief stint with the Windsor Spitfires is a testament to his love for hockey and his unwavering dedication to philanthropy, proving once again why he remains a beloved figure both on and off the screen.
